Prince Plays '80s-Heavy Set For SXSW Closing Party
Prince closed out South by Southwest in style over the weekend, playing a set that included several of his most well-known 80s hits and some surprising covers.
Joined by a 22-piece backing band, he played "Purple Rain," "U Got the Look," "Cool," "Housequake," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (Michael Jackson)," "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" (Janet Jackson) and "We're a Winner" (Curtis Mayfield).
"They called our people and said they need some funk in Austin," Prince told the audience at one point during the three-hour performance, according to USA Today.
NME added that the lengthy set included five costume changes as well as the Purple One interacting with the crowd several times.
"I love being a musician. I feel like a servant . . . a servant to you," he confessed to the 1,000 or so fans in the building.
