Alicia Keys Talks First Record Deal On Oprah's Master Class

Alicia Keys appeared on an recent edition of OWN's Oprah's Master Class and spoke on her first record deal. She was signed as a teen but was likely to attend New York's Ivy League college Columbia University if she hadn't inked the deal.

"I always have treated everything like it's my only chance. I was getting a little closer with the whole Columbia scenario and they were really moving towards potentially signing me . . ." says Keys.

She adds that a Columbia exec offered a sweet perk if she agreed to sign:

"And it was like the big top dog, the super big guy, me and my manager. And the guy was like we are pretty close but he said something to the nature of he'll basically give me the piano if I do the deal."

The interview appeared March 3 on OWN.
