Carrie Underwood To Star In NBC's Sound Of Music

Carrie Underwood will star in NBC's re-creation of The Sound of Music, which airs as a live 3-hour event next holiday season. Underwood will be cast as Maria von Trapp in the lead role made famous by Julie Andrews in the 1965 film version.

"Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp," said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, to People.

The original Broadway production premiered in 1959 and featured classic songs such as "My Favorite Things" and "Do-Re-Mi." It was later made in an Oscar-winning film.

Underwood's previous acting credits include roles on How I Met Your Mother, as the love interest of Ted (Josh Radnor), and, in her film debut last year, as a church leader in Soul Surfer.
