EGGS and CARS on MASSIVE RECALL LISTS!
Which recall came first, the Mazda or the egg?
Some 380 million eggs are affected in what could turn into the largest recall of its kind because of possible salmonella contamination. There have been hundreds of cases of people reportedly sickened from tainted eggs over the past three months in California, Colorado and Minnesota.
Unlike most cases of this kind, where the salmonella is on the outside of the egg, this recall is of eggs that are tainted on the inside with salmonella.
The eggs were produced at Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa and were sold under 13 brand names at various retailers throughout the country.
Any cartons with plants number P-1026, P-1413, and P-1946 should be tossed -- but not in an egg salad. Salmonella can cause severe cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.
Meanwhile, Mazda is recalling 215,0000 Mazda3 and Mazda5 models in the U.S. made in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
It seems that there's a malfunction with the power steering that could affect the "driver's ability to steer the vehicle as typically expected, and increasing the risk of a crash."

WOMEN SPEND 76 MINUTES GETTING READY FOR WORK...ON MONDAYS
A new survey finds both men and women spend more time getting ready for work on Mondays than any other day of the week. When broken down by gender, however, women spend nearly triple time time men do.
The survey of one thousand adults found that, on average, women spend 76 minutes getting ready for work on Mondays, with one-third of that time spent on hair. Eighteen minutes is spent on makeup, while 16 minutes is occupied with trying on different combinations of clothes. The remainder of those 76 minutes is spent on showering and washing.
That 76 minutes of prep time for women is reduced to 40 minutes on Tuesday and continues to decline as the week goes on, dropping to just 19 minutes on Fridays.
On average, men spend 28 minutes getting ready for work on Mondays, half that on Tuesdays, and just 11 minutes getting ready the other days of the week.
SANDRA BULLOCK MAKES SURPRISE APPEARANCE AT SPIKE TV AWARDS, JOKES ABOUT PERSONAL LIFE
SANDRA BULLOCK made a surprise appearance Saturday night at Spike TV's Guys Choice Awards in Culver City, California. In what was her first public appearance since she filed for divorce from an unfaithful JESSE JAMES, Bullock accepted the Entertainer of the Year prize, as voted on by U.S. military.
As she was surrounded by soldiers onstage, Bullock joked to the audience, "Let's be honest here, just for a moment. We're all going to be honest, right? Did I win this for being entertainer of the year, or did I win this because of the spectacular I.E.D. [improvised explosive device] explosion that became my personal life?" Bullock quickly added, "No, it's okay. Because I would do it over again if it was to entertain our troops, and our extraordinary troops deserve something much more than some actress in a tight dress talking about herself." The ceremony will air on Spike TV on June 20th.
Sandra also attended Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards to accept the Generation Award for her contributions to Hollywood.
CELINE DION HAPPY ABOUT MORNING SICKNESS
Feeling like you want to throw up isn't a sensation that anyone would be happy about, but CELINE DION isn't like other people. Celine, who's pregnant with twins, says she was happy to suffer morning sickness, because she'd tried for so long to have another baby. She says, "The first two months, I really felt the classic symptoms, the morning sickness, the hot flashes, nausea. In a certain way, that reassured me, like a sign that my pregnancy was progressing."
Celine also has revealed that she'll find out the babies' gender in about a week. She says that when the babies arrive, she doesn't plan on having a nanny -- she might just ask her sister and brother-in-law for help if she needs it. She explains, "Too many people in the house disorient children. My only task is to make my children happy. And too bad if the house is sometimes a mess." As for how her son, RENE-CHARLES, will react to the new additions after being an only child for so long, Celine tells us, "We have a deep relationship of nine-and-a-half years with [him], and I'll be able to see when he needs me."

A DEDUCTIBLE TIDBIT FOR YOU DURING "TAX WEEK"
Few Of Us Plan To Use Tax Refunds On "Fun" Activities

A new survey from Bankrate.com has most Americans planning to use their tax refunds in a fiscally responsible way, by either paying down debt, saving or investing it or spending it on everyday necessities. It finds that 84 percent of Americans planning to use their tax refunds in those ways, while just seven percent plan to use their money on "fun" activities like shopping or vacations.

Other tidbits from the survey:
  • Of that 84 percent who plan to use their refund in a practical way, 30 percent intend to pay down debt, 28 percent say they will save or invest, and 26 percent anticipate using it on food or utility bills.
  • 55 percent of respondents expect to get or have already received a tax refund this year, while 24 percent expect to owe taxes.
  • Just three percent of Americans getting a refund took a refund anticipation loan. Among people with incomes under 30 thousand dollars, that percentage doubles to six percent.
  • Among those who expect to owe money on their taxes this year, 63 percent plan to pay the tax bill from savings. Just six percent anticipate borrowing money to pay their IRS bill.
  • Of those who owe money, 17 percent plan to set up an installment plan with the IRS.
  • SOUND FAMILIAR?
A new study shows that some Mom's self-esteem suffers if they see that their husband is good at taking care of the kids. Experts say it's because Mom's feel like they have to do it all -- but kids do benefit from having two attentive and loving parents. Meanwhile, Swiss researchers say the secret to a long marriage is for the wife to be 5 years younger and 27 percent smarter than their husbands. With that in mind, on paper - my marriage to Barb must be a total failure. She is WAY more than just 27 percent smarter than I am...not to mention, I married an "older woman." Ok, by one year!
Last week, it was high chairs that the government warned could cause a risk to infants.
This week, it's baby slings that parents use to carry around their newborns that have come under the scrutiny of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC). Parents were warned that the SlingRider and Wendy Bellissimo slings made by Infantino may pose a suffocation risk, especially to babies four months and younger because of their lack of head control.

Infantino has voluntarily removed more than a million of its slings from the market and is offering replacement products. You can contact them directly for a replacement:

IN HISTORIC VOTE, THE HOUSE PASSES SENATE'S VERSION OF HEALTHCARE REFORM
After months of preaching, pleading and practically pulling teeth, PRESIDENT OBAMA is closer than ever to accomplishing the top priority of his first term: remaking the nation's $2.5 trillion healthcare industry in order to insure tens of millions of Americans currently without medical coverage.
On Sunday, the House passed the Senate version of healthcare reform legislation by a 219-to-212 margin. The bill now goes to Obama for his signature on Tuesday, while another measure that the House approved reconciling substantial differences between the two chambers heads back to the Senate, where it needs a simple majority for passage. That bill is preferable to the first because it would fix certain problems but at the very least, the White House can now move forward to enact healthcare reform.
Obviously thrilled by the outcome of the mission on which he staked his presidency, Obama said later that the legislation "answers the prayers of every American who has hoped deeply for something to be done about a health care system that works for insurance companies but not for ordinary people."
The president added the real beneficiaries are millions who can't get coverage because they're unemployed, work for a small business that can't afford to insure their workers, or can't get coverage from a private insurer because of a pre-existing medical condition.
There was no Republican support for the ten-year, $940 billion measure that the GOP contends will balloon the federal deficit, raise taxes, cut Medicare benefits for seniors and more importantly, facilitate a government takeover of the healthcare industry that would make medical services worse, not better.
Most Democrats say virtually the opposite will happen. Besides covering an additional 32 million people, they argue the bill would hold private insurers' feet to the fire by making it illegal for them to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions or cancel policies if someone gets sick.
TIGER WOODS READY TO PROVE AGAIN HE'S MASTER OF HIS OWN DOMAIN
It's out of the rough for TIGER WOODS and into the limelight once more.
Woods made it official Tuesday that he'll end his hiatus from golf by playing in the Masters, one of the PGA's four major tournaments, which begins April 8.
The world's greatest golfer and one of its most famous athletes has been largely hiding in the shadows since last November, when a car accident outside his Florida mansion opened the door wide on reports that Woods conducted numerous extramarital affairs, speculation that he eventually admitted was true.
Woods determined that it was time for his golf clubs to do the talking and deliberately chose the Masters for his return because it's the most tightly-controlled event on the PGA tour, guaranteeing Woods will be insulated from those who might want to ask embarrassing questions.

Already, Woods is listed as the favorite in the event that he's won four times in the past.

TAYLOR SWIFT makes her big-screen debut in Valentine's Day, hitting theaters nationwide Friday. She plays a high school student named Felicia, whom Taylor describes as "very caught-up in high school" and a "really fun character to play." Of course, "Felicia" is the love interest of TAYLOR LAUTNER's character, Willy, and the one-time real-life couple shares a kiss in the film. They shot their scenes at a high school where class was actually in session. "It was definitely a very interesting and exciting day."

Here's a rundown of the big names in the cast: JULIA ROBERTS, JAMIE FOXX, ASHTON KUTCHER, TAYLOR LAUTNER, JENNIFER GARNER, JESSICA ALBA, JESSICA BIEL, ANNE HATHAWAY, PATRICK DEMPSEY, QUEEN LATIFAH, EMMA ROBERTS, KATHY BATES, SHIRLEY MACLAINE, GEORGE LOPEZ, and yes, TAYLOR SWIFT.
The Utah State Tax Commission usually hires a couple of hundred temporary employees to deal with the returns, but because of budget cuts there will be fewer people processing paper forms. Spokesman Charlie Roberts says "If you file electronically you're going to get your return in a matter of weeks," he explained. "If you file the old fashioned, traditional paper method, it could be several months before you get your refund back."

CARRIE UNDERWOOD GEARS UP TO SING NATIONAL ANTHEM AT SUPERBOWL 44
CARRIE UNDERWOOD has been busy preparing to sing the national anthem at Super Bowl 44 this Sunday. Though she's watched several tapes of past anthem singers, Carrie got some great advice from fellow artist HARRY CONNICK, JR. about her big Super Bowl gig. The New Orleans native, who sang the anthem himself in 1992, told her, "Oh girl...you know what you're doing. Just get out there and do it."
As Carrie performs the national anthem this Sunday, her mind will be on all the troops currently serving overseas. Carrie's been on a few USO tours of her own, and she knows that soldiers often watch the Super Bowl while abroad. Says Carrie, "I think it'll be a great way to remember home and have an escape from what's going on around them."
Carrie and Queen Latifah will perform during the pre-game show, prior to the Super Bowl kick off at 6:25 p.m. ET on CBS this Sunday.
TOYOTA PROMISES 'PARTS ARE ON THE WAY'
The Big Fix is in -- or at least, that's what Toyota Motor Corp. is praying for.

As many as 4.2 million Toyota cars and trucks across the globe were recalled, including 2.3 million in the U.S., because of an accelerator that can get stuck and cause the vehicle to dangerously accelerate.
As a result, Toyota prohibited dealers from selling eight models on which this problem can occur, while halting production of the same cars until February 7th. Starting Thursday, many dealers plan to stay open 24 hours until every gas pedal defect is corrected.

HOW DONATIONS ARE BEING SPENT IN HAITI
Curious about how your contribution to earthquake relief in Haiti is being spent?
So far, U.S. government spending to help Haiti has reached $379 million, or the equivalent of every American donating about a buck and a quarter.
Breaking down how each dollar is being spent: 42 cents goes directly to disaster assistance and 33 cents is earmarked for military aid. Further, nine cents is spent on food and another nine cents goes toward transporting the food. A nickel out of each dollar pays Haitian survivors.
That leaves about a penny-and-a-half. The Haitian government gets a little less than one cent and the Dominican Republican, Haiti's neighbor, gets what's left over.

JUST IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...A NEW DECADE?
This Email should provide you with answers:

    From: Kris McFadden
    Sent: Wednesday, January 06, 2010 6:13 PM
    To: Brian Foxx

    Brian,

This morning (yesterday by the time you read this) Dec 6th you made the comment that we were in a new decade. We are still the the 201st decade A.D. until the end of 2010. Let me explain.
According to the current calender there was a 1 B.C. and the following year was 1 A.D. There was no year zero. A decade is 10 whole years. So the first decade started January 1st 1 A.D. and ended December 31st 10 A.D. The second decade started January 1st 11 A.D.
The Roman numeral system does not include a zero.
I understand the confusion. When you were born you were not 1 until you lived 1 full year. But until your first birthday you were IN your first year. So you (and I) had a year 0, when we were 0 years old, usually counted in months. But the calender does not have a year 0. We call this current year 2010 the whole year meaning that we are in the 2010th year A.D., and the 2010th year is not over until the end of December 31, 2010. So we are in the last year of the 201st decade A.D.

    Does this help?
    Thanks
    Kris

A Look Forward to 2010 Music
OK, so 2009 is over. What have we got to look forward to in 2010 when it comes to music? A lot, actually, from hotly-anticipated albums and tours, to the return of American Idol.

HERE'S A LOOK AT WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING IN 2010:

A possible new CD from MADONNA: Madonna released a greatest hits package in 2009, but is said to be working on new material.

A possible new CD from DAVID COOK: He's already started working on it, and he describes it as more, quote, "tongue-in-cheek and urgent" than his debut. It may be out before the end of this year.

The possible re-emergence of SHANIA TWAIN: Shania has been M.I.A. musically since 2004, but she promises "lots of exciting things to share and report in early 2010." She'll also appear on American Idol January 19th as a guest judge.
TAYLOR SWIFT: 2009 BELONGED TO HER
In 2009, America collectively came to the realization that it's TAYLOR SWIFT's world and we're just living in it. The 19-year-old shot to dizzying heights this past year thanks to her Fearless album, her sold-out tour of the same name, her string of hit singles, her many magazine covers, her countless awards, her hush-hush romance with Twilight star TAYLOR LAUTNER and -- oh yes -- the MTV Video Music Awards incident that became one of the most talked about celebrity events of the year. To quote KANYE WEST, our Taylor definitely had one of the greatest years of all time -- of all time! And since she seemed to make news just about every day of 2009, here's a rundown of the highlights, broken down month by month.

    January
Taylor rang in 2009 with a performance on ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest

    February
Taylor took the number-one spot on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart for a 10th non-consecutive week. No artist had pulled off that feat since SANTANA spent 12 weeks at the top back in 2000 with his album Supernatural. Fearless ended up spending a total of 11 non-consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard chart.

    March
Taylor made her small-screen acting debut with a guest spot on CBS's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on March 5th. She played teen murder victim HALEY JONES in an episode titled "Turn, Turn, Turn."

    April
Taylor was in Las Vegas on April 5th for the Academy of Country Music Awards, where she won the prestigious Album of the Year trophy for Fearless. plans a second leg in 2010.

    May
TAYLOR SWIFT landed on People magazine's Most Beautiful list in May for the second year in a row. In that issue, Taylor said, quote, "It's important to be comfortable with who you are and go natural once in awhile." Taylor also graced the cover of Seventeen magazine's May issue.

    June
Taylor used the hip-hop alias "T-Swizzle" for her collaboration with R&B star T-PAIN at the 2009 CMT Music Awards on June 16th. They performed a re-worked version of "Love Story," titled "Thug Story," which found Taylor rapping these lyrics: "No, I ain't got a gun/No, I never really been in a club/Still live wit' my parents/But I'm still a thug!" Taylor's "Love Story" clip was also named Video of the Year that night.

    July
On July 30th, Taylor grabbed headlines when she filmed scenes for her silver screen debut in the film Valentine's Day opposite TAYLOR LAUTNER. Photos of the two Taylors kissing for the film set off rumors they were dating and continuous sightings of the couple at hockey games, Taylor's concerts and restaurants in Los Angeles and Nashville have done little to dispel those rumors.

    August
Taylor won two surfboards from the Teen Choice Awards on August 9th ny winning Choice Female Artist and Choice Female Album for Fearless.
Taylor brought her Fearless tour to New York City's legendary Madison Square Garden on August 27th. Tickets for the show sold out in just one minute.

    September
On the morning of September 9th, Taylor learned she was up for country music's biggest honor, the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year award. She posted a video online showing her ecstatic reaction to the big news.
If Taylor wasn't already a household name, she sure was after MTV Video Music Awards on September 13th. After Taylor won Female Video of the Year for "You Belong To Me," KANYE WEST stormed the stage during Taylor's acceptance speech, grabbed the microphone and uttered his famous quote: "Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you finish. But BEYONCE had one of the best videos of all time. Of all time!" Taylor was left standing shocked along with the rest of the audience, and the incident became virtually the only topic of discussion on Twitter, with Taylor's fellow celebs pledging their support and dissing Kanye. Later in the evening, when Beyonce went on to win Video of the Year for "Single Ladies," she graciously brought Taylor out to "have her moment" with a proper acceptance speech. Kanye was ejected from the event.
People magazine named Taylor one of their 10 Best-Dressed Women of the Year in an announcement made in mid-September.

    October
Taylor made a slew of TV appearances in October to promote the release of the expanded Fearless: Platinum Edition on October 25th. The set featured six new songs and tons of video extras, and Taylor plugged it on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dancing with the Stars and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The six new songs from Fearless: Platinum Edition ended up in the top 10 of iTunes within 24 hours of the album's release and five of the songs went on to debut on Billboard's Hot 100 chart -- the first time an artist had pulled off that feat.

    November
Taylor started off the month with "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me" being included in the new Band Hero video game, released on November 3rd. Fans were also able to play the game as a digitized version of her.
Taylor pulled double duty as host and musical guest of Saturday Night Live's November 7th episode. It would prove to be one of SNL's highest-rated episode of the year.
On November 11th, Taylor dominated the CMA Awards in Nashville, becoming the youngest-ever artist to win country music's most prestigious prize, Entertainer of the Year. In her acceptance speech, an emotional Taylor said, quote, "Everything I have ever wanted has just happened to me." She also won Album of the Year for Fearless, Video of the Year for "Love Story" and Female Vocalist of the Year.
And the accolades kept coming for Taylor. On November 10th, she was nominated for three People's Choice Awards, and later that month on the 22nd, Taylor cleaned up again at the American Music Awards, beating MICHAEL JACKSON for the Artist of the Year award.

    December
Taylor kicked December off by receiving eight Grammy nominations on December 2nd, including Record and Song of the Year for "You Belong with Me" and Album of the Year for Fearless. She was second only to BEYONCE, who scored 10 nods.
Taylor celebrated a big milestone on December 13th her 20th birthday.
Taylor also made a big donation on her birthday. She gave 250 thousand dollars to schools she'd either attended or been associated with over the years. The money will go to school supplies, books and teachers' salaries.
Taylor capped off the year with the honor of being named Billboard magazine's Artist of the Year, based on rankings from both the Hot 100 and Top 200 Albums charts. As if that weren't enough, Fearless has now been certified five-times platinum, making it her best-selling album to date, and the best-selling album of 2009 by a living artist.
Taylor knows she owes all of her success to her fans. In her MySpace blog, she wrote, "Thank you again for everything you guys have done to make these magical things happen to me...we just can't believe it."
This year FM100.3 is thrilled to be a sponsor again of "A Kurt Bestor Christmas" at Abravenel Hall this week. The shows run from Thursday, December 10th through Saturday, December 12th in Salt Lake City. Amazingly enough, this is the 21st year that Kurt has brought his original compositions and arrangements and traditional Christmas favorites to the stage. FM100.3's Rebecca Cressman talked with Kurt about this year's show, this year's special guest performer all the way from South Africa, and why his daughters will be very much a part of "A Kurt Bestor Christmas" again this year. WHO NEEDS 'BLACK FRIDAY' ANYWAYS? CHECK OUT THESE 'PRE' BLACK FRIDAY DEALS!
For years, the day after Thanksgiving has been termed "Black Friday," because it's one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Retailers hope it's one of the most profitable ones, too. That's how the day got its name, as you perhaps know: merchants have historically relied on Black Friday to move out of the red and into the black, hence showing a profit.

This year, Walmart ushered in Christmas on Halloween with Black Friday pricing on a variety of "secret" in-store specials. They've also cut prices weekly on thousands of items from bananas to board games throughout the holidays. Perhaps of even more note, the chain said on Wednesday that it will keep all of its stores open round-the-clock on Thanksgiving weekend and implement new crowd-control measures in the aftermath of last's years fatal trampling of an employee during a frenetic Black Friday sale.

Over at Sears, the chain began offering "Black Friday Now" deals on Oct. 31, and they're slated to continue every Saturday from 7 a.m. until noon through Thanksgiving. Some of the early bargains included a Craftsman 302-piece mechanic's tool set at half off; a ProForma XP elliptical exerciser for $400 (regularly $700), and a 42-in. Zenith Plasma TV for $499, a $250 savings.

Kmart kicked off its "Better than Black Friday" campaign last week. Some of the recent deals have included Protégé basketball shoes at $15 a pair, General Electric artificial Christmas trees at 25 to 33 percent off, Basic Editions jeans at $7, and a Little Letters Learning Laptop at half price.

Finally, Best Buy is making a pitch to draw in value-conscious consumers by offering a $250 computer, the cheapest laptop the chain's ever sold. The Acer laptop, with a Intel Celeron 900 processor, 2 GB memory, and a 160 GB hard drive, went on sale in stores and online earlier this week.
The countdown to the release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon has begun. Though the sequel doesn't open until this Friday, its premiere will take place Monday night in Los Angeles, with fans already lining up to catch a glimpse of the cast. There's no question that New Moon will do big box office business next weekend -- it's surpassed Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith as the biggest advance ticket-seller in Hollywood history.

You can log onto MySpace Monday night to watch streaming video coverage of the L.A. premiere, catching all the action on the red carpet. You can also submit questions for the cast to answer. The live stream begins 6 p.m. Mountain time at myspace.com/newmoonpremiere.

TAYLOR SWIFT MAKES HISTORY AT THE 43RD ANNUAL CMA'S
    (Country Music Association Awards Show)
She's a pop superstar now, but TAYLOR SWIFT did, after all, get her start in country music -- and last night at the Country Music Association Awards in Nashville, she cleaned up, but good. At age 19, she became the youngest artist ever to win the CMA's prestigious Entertainer of the Year trophy -- which is pretty much the highest honor you can win if you're a country star. She also became the first female artist to win that award since 1999, when SHANIA TWAIN did it.

PARENTS OF 'BALLOON BOY' IN HOT WATER
For a couple of hours last Thursday, things looked dire for six-year-old Colorado youth FALCON HEENE, who became known to the world as the "balloon boy."
It turned out that Falcon was okay but his parents can't say that much about themselves.
Criminal charges will be pursued against RICHARD and MAYUMI HEENE in the bizarre case, according to Larimer County Sheriff JIM ALDERDEN.
On Sunday, Alderden accused Falcon's mom and dad of concocting a scheme, which had authorities, media and the public believing for several hours that Falcon was stranded aboard the family's hot, air balloon after it supposedly got loose from its tetherings.
After landing two hours later, about 50 miles from Fort Collins, Falcon was nowhere to be found with everyone fearing the worst. But authorities were soon told that Falcon was found hiding in the attic of the family garage after a scolding by his dad.
Now, Sheriff Alderden said that even the part about the attic might have been bogus too. He says authorities believe Richard and Mayumi Heene staged the entire episode to get a reality TV show deal.
Convictions on the most serious counts carry a maximum of six years in prison and up to a $500,000 fine. What's more, federal charges might also be possible.
Oh, and child protective services were contacted to determine if any of the couple's three sons are in danger.
'WHATEVER' VOTED AS MOST ANNOYING WORD
If it bothers you when someone says "whatever," or more like "WHAT-everrrrr," you're not alone. According to a new Marist Poll, 47 percent of those asked said there was no more annoying word than "whatever."

Here are the top five popular words and phrases and the percentage of respondents who consider them to be annoying, according to the poll:

    1. "Whatever" -- 47 percent
    2. "You know" -- 25 percent
    3. "It is what it is" -- 11 percent
    4. "Anyway" -- seven percent
    5. "At the end of the day" -- two percent

Geographically, the world "whatever" is more annoying to folks in the Midwest than the Northeast: 55 percent to 35 percent.
The Poll is based on 938 telephone responses.

VINCE VAUGHN'S 'COUPLES RETREAT' OPENS IN THEATERS TODAY
VINCE VAUGHN gets more than just rest and relaxation when he travels to a tropical island in Couples Retreat, the only new film opening in wide release today. He and his wife, played by Watchmen's MALIN AKERMAN, are unexpectedly forced into relationship counseling with three other couples with whom they're friends. They take part in humiliating exercises that are supposed to help them grow closer to their mates, whereupon hilarity ensues. Brian Foxx says "Thumbs Up, it's a Couples Retreat with true sequel potential." 'COUPLES RETREAT is rated PG-13.
DAVID LETTERMAN'S APOLOGY GETS MORE BIG NUMBERS FOR THE 'LATE SHOW'
DAVID LETTERMAN's scandal has piqued the curiosity of the public who want to hear what he has to say about it. The apology he issued to his wife and staff on Monday's Late Show drew a rating of 4.2, which was higher than any of NBC's primetime programs -- including JAY LENO's talk show -- on the same night. To put it in clearer terms, the rating was slightly less than that of last Thursday's Late Show, when Letterman first revealed his affairs and the alleged blackmail scheme against him. That episode drew 5.8 million viewers. Nielsen has not disclosed an audience estimate for Monday's episode.

CBS News producer ROBERT J. "JOE" HALDERMAN has pleaded not guilty to grand larceny in connection with the extortion case. He reportedly threatened to blackmail Letterman using material from the diary of Halderman's former partner, Late Show employee STEPHANIE BIRKITT. According to the New York Post, Birkitt wrote in her diary that she had a relationship with Letterman before and after moving in with Halderman in Connecticut. She reportedly claimed to Halderman that she was simply Letterman's best friend, but she went on hikes with the late-night host at his Montana ranch last fall. The Post also reports that Letterman drove to her Connecticut home at least once a week, and that he offered to hire her as his lawyer after she graduated from law school last year. Halderman reportedly learned of Birkitt's affair while reading her diary last December.
AAA URGES DRIVERS TO... PAY ATTENTION!
AAA Utah wants drivers to pay extra attention to the road, not the radio or cell phone this week.
It's the motor club's "Heads Up Driving Week."
A spokeswoman says just a moment of distraction is all the time needed to cause a crash. AAA hopes people can go distraction-free for the week and then make it a habit.
AAA says one of the best things drivers can do is turn off the phone so they aren't tempted to talk or text while on the road.
Other recommendations include eat first, then drive, and stow away loose objects that could roll around and be a distraction.
In case you didn't believe that BRIAN LITTRELL's swine flu is the reason the BACKSTREET BOYS canceled a TV appearance and a fan meet and greet this week, all you need to do is look at the video that Brian posted on YouTube. In the video, Brian looks like death warmed over and speaks with great difficulty. He says, "My job right now is to stay away from as many people as I can...I hope that the next time that you see me, that I will feel better but for the next three to four days, I've gotta be out of the loop."

The Boys were due to appear on the CBS Early Show on Tuesday, the day their new CD, This Is Us, hit stores. That appearance was scrapped, as well as a charity meet-and-greet that was to have taken place Monday at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City. The Backstreet Boys were also due to tape appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live this week. Those plans are now up in the air.

WOODY HARRELSON's horror-comedy Zombieland killed the competition over the weekend, earning an estimated 25 million dollars to debut at number one. The film stole the top spot away from 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs', which ruled the box office for two weekends before dropping to second place, with 16.7 million. The 3-D re-releases of 'Toy Story and Toy Story 2' began its limited engagement as a double feature by raising 12 and a half million, good for third place.
The Invention of Lying premiered at number four, with 7.4 million dollars, whipping DREW BARRYMORE in the process. Her roller derby flick, Whip It, had a disappointing debut, tying for sixth place along with MICHAEL MOORE's new documentary Capitalism: A Love Story, which screened in fewer than one thousand theaters. Both movies made 4.85 million bucks.
Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales:

    1. Zombieland, $25 million.
    2. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, $16.7 million.
    3. Toy Story and Toy Story 2, $12.5 million.
    4. The Invention of Lying, $7.4 million.
    5. Surrogates, $7.3 million.
6 (tie). Capitalism: A Love Story, $4.85 million.
6 (tie). Whip It, $4.85 million.

    10. Love Happens, $2.8 million.
Billions of dollars in tax money has been paid to pharmaceutical companies to develop millions of doses of the H1N1 vaccine, but a new survey indicates many Americans and Utahns are rather ambivalent about having it injected into their arms or squirted up their noses. The first batches of the swine flu vaccine arrive in states this week.
A poll of 1,042 adults released Friday by the Harvard School of Public Health shows only 40 percent of respondents were sure they would receive the vaccine. About half said they were certain their children would.
One third of those polled expressed concern about possible side effects and just 18 percent thought the vaccine was safe for children under two years of age.
Health authorities say the proportion of Americans who get immunized against the seasonal flu each year is lower than the 40 percent in the swine flu survey, but officials were hoping there would be much greater demand for this immunization because more people are expected to be infected with it because most don't have a built-up immunity against it. Children, young adults and pregnant women appear to be most vulnerable.
Health officials say the H1N1 vaccine is made the same way as the seasonal flu vaccine, of which serious side effects are extremely rare. "Safety is our top priority. What we want people to know is that no corners were cut at all" in the development and testing of the Swine flu vaccine. They also insist that the H1N1 vaccine is safe and effective.
A total of 250 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine will be made available in the coming months. Here is where you can find Utah locations that will administer the H1N1 Vaccine:

BATTLE OF THE DIVAS: MADONNA, MARIAH, AND BARBRA ALL RELEASE NEW CD'S TODAY
It's a diva throwdown in record stores today, as MADONNA, MARIAH CAREY and BARBRA STREISAND all release new CDs.

MADONNA's album, Celebration, is a best-of compilation available as a single CD or two-disc set. It includes pretty much every song you'd want from the Material Girl, from recent hits like "Music," "4 Minutes" and "Hung Up," to '90s hits like 'Vogue" and "Ray of Light," to early classics like "Holiday," "Lucky Star" and "Like A Virgin." Also in stores today is a two-disc DVD featuring all her iconic videos. Madonna isn't one for looking back, but she admits, "Every once in a while, I do have a moment of reflection...if someone does, like, a retrospective of my career, and then I go, 'Oh my Gosh! I did all that?"

Mariah's Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel was originally scheduled to come out last month, but the release date was changed several times while Mariah tweaked the album to perfection. Though some songs on the CD were definitely inspired by her marriage to NICK CANNON, there are several others about heartbreak and loss. The album's latest single, a cover of FOREIGNER's "I Want To Know What Love Is," is a welcome return for those Mariah fans who prefer the ballad side of her style.

Barbra Streisand's new CD, Love Is The Answer, is her first new studio album since 2005. Recorded in collaboration with Canadian jazz star DIANA KRALL, the CD features standards like "Make Someone Happy" and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes."
You can't keep a good airline pilot down.
Since last January's emergency landing on New York's Hudson River that saved the lives of 155 passengers and crew, Captain CHESLEY "SULLY" SULLENBERGER hasn't returned to the cockpit. But it was all by his doing.
The self-grounding is about to end soon, though, as US Airways announced Monday that Sullenberger is ready to take flight once more.
Since the incident, the airline transport pilot has been busy making speaking engagements and writing an autobiography. But through it all, Sullenberger admits he's missed the thrill of air travel.
While no exact date for Sullenberger's return has been set, he'll come back as both a management pilot for US Airways and join the airline's safety management team. Pretty cool stuff.

DID YOU WASH YOUR HANDS TODAY?
The threat of being infected with the H1N1 virus has more people worried about their hygiene nowadays, and a new survey shows Americans are doing a better job when it comes to washing their hands.
The fifth annual "Clean Hands Report" from The Soap and Detergent Association gives Americans a grade of "B-minus" in hand-washing, up from a "C-minus" in 2008. The report card is based on a series of questions asked of 888 Americans. Here are some results:
    * 50 percent of respondents say they wash their hands more than ten times a day. In 2008, it was 36 percent.
    * 70 percent of people say they wash at least seven times a day.
    * 62 percent of women wash their hands more than ten times a day, compared to just 37 percent of men.
    * A majority of Americans claim to "always" wash their hands before eating lunch, after coughing or sneezing and after using the bathroom. Thirty six percent say they seldom or never wash their hands after coughing or sneezing.
    * 46 percent of respondents wash their hands for 15 seconds or less. The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention recommends washing with soap and water for at least 15 to 20 seconds.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Has Delicious Debut At Number One

All of the publicity that JENNIFER ANISTON and MEGAN FOX drew didn't provide much of a boost for their new films. Aniston's romantic comedy Love Happens premiered in fourth place, collecting 8.5 million, while Fox's horror-comedy Jennifer's Body made just 6.8 million.

HOLLYWOOD MORNS THE LOSS OF PATRICK SWAYZE
The Hollywood tributes immediately began to pour in Monday night for PATRICK SWAYZE, who passed away yesterday from pancreatic cancer at the age of 57. Here's a look at some of the kind words people have had to say:

    * Swayze's Dirty Dancing co-star JENNIFER GREY told People: "When I think of him, I think of being in his arms when we were kids, dancing, practicing the lift in the freezing lake, having a blast doing this tiny little movie we thought no one would ever see." She added Swayze was a, quote, ""real cowboy with a tender heart" and "it was not surprising to me that the war he waged on his cancer was so courageous and dignified. Patrick was a rare and beautiful combination of raw masculinity and amazing grace. My heart goes out to his wife and childhood sweetheart, LISA NIEMI, to his mom, PATSY, and to the rest of their family."

    * Swayze's Ghost co-star WHOOPI GOLDBERG: "Patrick was a really good man, a funny man and one to whom I owe much that I can't ever repay. I believe in Ghost's message, so he'll always be near."

    * Swayze's Ghost co-star DEMI MOORE, on her Twitter feed: "And in the words of Sam to Molly. 'It's amazing Molly. The love inside, you take it with you.' I love and will miss you Patrick."

    * Demi Moore's husband ASHTON KUTCHER: Tweeted "RIP P Swayze" and posted a link to a clip of Swayze's famous Saturday Night Live sketch in which he competed for a job as a Chippendales dancer against the late CHRIS FARLEY.

    * C. THOMAS HOWELL, who co-starred with Swayze in The Outsiders, Grandview U.S.A. and Red Dawn: "I have always had a special place in my heart for Patrick....Not only did we lose a fine actor [Monday], I lost my older Outsiders brother."

    * Fellow Outsiders star ROB LOWE told People: "Patrick lived a hundred lifetimes in one. I will remember him for that, and I will remember him for how much he loved his wife Lisa. He was such an intense actor, so full of passion and vigor. He definitely made the most out of it. It's a sad day."

    * RALPH MACCHIO, who also starred in The Outsiders: "Patrick fought the ultimate fight as passionate as he embraced his life -- with strength, dignity and grace. His love of his work and family was inspirational. He touched so many...I am proud to have shared in his journey...Remembering my fellow greaser. Stay Gold, buddy."

    * Swayze's Point Break co-star, GARY BUSEY: "Patrick Swayze was a kindred spirit and a spiritual brother of mine. His focus was center target and his purpose was with faith, kindness, grace, understanding, and love."

    * TRAVIS FIMMEL, who appeared with Swayze on the A&E series The Beast: "He was an inspiration, a gentleman and I was blessed to have worked with him and even more blessed to have called him my friend. My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Lisa and their family."

    * A statement from A&E: "We are saddened by the loss of one of our generation's greatest talents and a member of the A&E family. Patrick's work on The Beast was an inspiration to us all. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his wife Lisa and his entire family during this difficult time."

    * BARBARA WALTERS, who sat down with Swayze in an interview that aired in January: "He fought the bravest battle and sadly lost. My heart goes out to his wonderful Lisa, his wife and soul mate for 34 years."

PREPARED TEXT OF OBAMA'S SPEECH TO SCHOOL KIDS (Positive Message or Political Agenda...YOU be the Judge)
The prepared text of President Barack Obama's back-to-school address scheduled for Tuesdays, as released in advance by the White House:

    Here goes...

Hello, everyone _ how's everybody doing today? I'm here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we've got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through 12th grade. I'm glad you all could join us today.

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it's your first day in a new school, so it's understandable if you're a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you're in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could've stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.

I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived in Indonesia for a few years, and my mother didn't have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday _ at 4:30 in the morning.

Now I wasn't too happy about getting up that early. A lot of times, I'd fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I'd complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and say, "This is no picnic for me either, buster."

So I know some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I'm here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I'm here because I want to talk with you about your education and what's expected of all of you in this new school year.

Now I've given a lot of speeches about education. And I've talked a lot about responsibility.

I've talked about your teachers' responsibility for inspiring you, and pushing you to learn.

I've talked about your parents' responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and get your homework done, and don't spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with that Xbox.

I've talked a lot about your government's responsibility for setting high standards, supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren't working where students aren't getting the opportunities they deserve.

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.

And that's what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.

Every single one of you has something you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide.

Maybe you could be a good writer _ maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper _ but you might not know it until you write a paper for your English class. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor _ maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or a new medicine or vaccine _ but you might not know it until you do a project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice, but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.

And no matter what you want to do with your life _ I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You're going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You can't drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You've got to work for it and train for it and learn for it.

And this isn't just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. What you're learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.

You'll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment. You'll need the insights and critical thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free. You'll need the creativity and ingenuity you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and boost our economy.

We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect so you can help solve our most difficult problems. If you don't do that _ if you quit on school _ you're not just quitting on yourself, you're quitting on your country.

Now I know it's not always easy to do well in school. I know a lot of you have challenges in your lives right now that can make it hard to focus on your schoolwork.

I get it. I know what that's like. My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mother who struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn't always able to give us things the other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and felt like I didn't fit in.

So I wasn't always as focused as I should have been. I did some things I'm not proud of, and got in more trouble than I should have. And my life could have easily taken a turn for the worse.

But I was fortunate. I got a lot of second chances and had the opportunity to go to college, and law school, and follow my dreams. My wife, our first lady Michelle Obama, has a similar story. Neither of her parents had gone to college, and they didn't have much. But they worked hard, and she worked hard, so that she could go to the best schools in this country.

Some of you might not have those advantages. Maybe you don't have adults in your life who give you the support that you need. Maybe someone in your family has lost their job, and there's not enough money to go around. Maybe you live in a neighborhood where you don't feel safe, or have friends who are pressuring you to do things you know aren't right.

But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life _ what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you've got going on at home _ that's no excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude. That's no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school. That's no excuse for not trying.

Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you. Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future.

That's what young people like you are doing every day, all across America.

Young people like Jazmin Perez, from Roma, Texas. Jazmin didn't speak English when she first started school. Hardly anyone in her hometown went to college, and neither of her parents had gone either. But she worked hard, earned good grades, got a scholarship to Brown University, and is now in graduate school, studying public health, on her way to being Dr. Jazmin Perez.

I'm thinking about Andoni Schultz, from Los Altos, California, who's fought brain cancer since he was three. He's endured all sorts of treatments and surgeries, one of which affected his memory, so it took him much longer _ hundreds of extra hours _ to do his schoolwork. But he never fell behind, and he's headed to college this fall.

And then there's Shantell Steve, from my hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Even when bouncing from foster home to foster home in the toughest neighborhoods, she managed to get a job at a local health center; start a program to keep young people out of gangs; and she's on track to graduate high school with honors and go on to college.

Jazmin, Andoni and Shantell aren't any different from any of you. They faced challenges in their lives just like you do. But they refused to give up. They chose to take responsibility for their education and set goals for themselves. And I expect all of you to do the same. That's why today, I'm calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education _ and to do everything you can to meet them. Your goal can be something as simple as doing all your homework, paying attention in class, or spending time each day reading a book. Maybe you'll decide to get involved in an extracurricular activity, or volunteer in your community. Maybe you'll decide to stand up for kids who are being teased or bullied because of who they are or how they look, because you believe, like I do, that all kids deserve a safe environment to study and learn. Maybe you'll decide to take better care of yourself so you can be more ready to learn. And along those lines, I hope you'll all wash your hands a lot, and stay home from school when you don't feel well, so we can keep people from getting the flu this fall and winter.

Whatever you resolve to do, I want you to commit to it. I want you to really work at it.

I know that sometimes, you get the sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work _ that your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star, when chances are, you're not going to be any of those things.

But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won't love every subject you study. You won't click with every teacher. Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right this minute. And you won't necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try.

That's OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who've had the most failures. J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter book was rejected twelve times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, "I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

These people succeeded because they understand that you can't let your failures define you _ you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time. If you get in trouble, that doesn't mean you're a troublemaker, it means you need to try harder to behave. If you get a bad grade, that doesn't mean you're stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying.

No one's born being good at things, you become good at things through hard work. You're not a varsity athlete the first time you play a new sport. You don't hit every note the first time you sing a song. You've got to practice. It's the same with your schoolwork. You might have to do a math problem a few times before you get it right, or read something a few times before you understand it, or do a few drafts of a paper before it's good enough to hand in.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and to learn something new. So find an adult you trust _ a parent, grandparent or teacher; a coach or counselor _ and ask them to help you stay on track to meet your goals.

And even when you're struggling, even when you're discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you _ don't ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.

The story of America isn't about people who quit when things got tough. It's about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best. It's the story of students who sat where you sit 250 years ago, and went on to wage a revolution and found this nation. Students who sat where you sit 75 years ago who overcame a Depression and won a world war; who fought for civil rights and put a man on the moon. Students who sat where you sit 20 years ago who founded Google, Twitter and Facebook and changed the way we communicate with each other.

So today, I want to ask you, what's your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve? What discoveries will you make? What will a president who comes here in twenty or fifty or one hundred years say about what all of you did for this country?

Your families, your teachers, and I are doing everything we can to make sure you have the education you need to answer these questions. I'm working hard to fix up your classrooms and get you the books, equipment and computers you need to learn. But you've got to do your part too. So I expect you to get serious this year. I expect you to put your best effort into everything you do. I expect great things from each of you. So don't let us down _ don't let your family or your country or yourself down. Make us all proud. I know you can do it.

Mickey Mouse, meet Spider-Man. Under the agreement, Disney acquires the rights to Marvel's Spider-Man, Iron Man, X-Men, and dozens of other comic book characters. THE FINAL DESTINATION STOPS AT #1
The Final Destination made the trip to number one at the box office over the weekend. The fourth film in the horror series debuted with an estimated 28.3 million dollars. Last weekend's top film, Inglourious Basterds, placed second, with 20 million.
Halloween II opened in the third spot, raking in 17.4 million dollars, while ANG LEE's Taking Woodstock hit a sour note with moviegoers, collecting just 3.7 million to premiere in ninth place.
Even though we won't celebrate Labor Day until next week, box office analyst PAUL DERGARABEDIAN considers today to be the end of the summer movie season because the holiday landed on the first of September last year. With that in mind, Dergarabedian estimates that Hollywood will have earned 4.26 billion dollars during the summer movie season, surpassing last year's record total thanks to higher ticket prices. However, he says attendance was down 2.2 percent from last summer.
Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales:

WHITNEY HOUSTON FANS - THE DIVA IS BACK!
I Look To You, Whitney's first new studio album since 2002's Just Whitney, arrives in stores today. It's being released on a Monday instead of the usual Tuesday because today, August 31st, is the cutoff date for an album to be eligible for the 2010 Grammys.
Whitney actually had no plans to return to recording, until music-biz legend Clive Davis called her three years ago and told her it was time to get back into the studio. She says she was enjoying living a low-key life in L.A. and being a single mother to her daughter, BOBBI KRISTINA. Whitney says, "I kinda got comfortable with being left alone; with being a mom. I liked that vibe, I liked the feeling." But Whitney says that both Davis and her own mother told her they wanted some new music, and fans she'd meet on the street told her the same thing. Whitney just couldn't say no, admitting, "I felt humbled to be asked to do it again, and to want to be heard again."
Whitney's biggest problem now is overcoming all the bad press she's gotten over the past decade, thanks to rumors of drug abuse, bizarre behavior and a very public 2006 divorce from BOBBY BROWN. Whitney says, "I just want to be recognized for my music and how it inspires people...as opposed to talking about Whitney all the time. That's all done; that's passé."

Osmond joined motorcycle riders Sunday morning in Sandy for the first-ever MS Motorcycle Ride. The money raised will be donated to MS research.

Utah's Fallen Officers Honored with Motorcycle Ride
    RIDE 4 FALLEN OFFICERS
Leaders of our state, one ambassador and hundreds of Harley riders took to the streets Sunday morning for the annual "Ride 4 Fallen Officers." It was part of a tribute to officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
This is the third year Utah's fallen officers have been honored with the ride, which started in Lindon and ended at the State Capitol.
Rider Randy O'Hara said, "It's awesome hearing all these motorcycles start up at the same time and ride together, it's awesome."
"Bikers are very charitable people," explained Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff.
Even after crashing in this ride two years ago and breaking his leg, Shurtleff couldn't stay away.
The bikers cruised I-15 to 4500 South and then took State Street to the Capitol. Officers blocked traffic, and a fire truck hoisted a huge American flag over head.
The group of bikers grows every year; each one of them riding for the 126 fallen officers who have died serving Utah.
Even former Gov. Jon Huntsman, who is now U.S. ambassador to China, rode. He had a relative who died in the line of duty in the 1920s.
"This brings together the two finest people I've met, riders and law enforcement families," Huntsman said.
This will be his last ride. He leaves for China on Monday.
After the ride, there was a ceremony at the new memorial for fallen officers on the west side of the Capitol. Many members of fallen officers rode, like Gary Koehn. He lost his son-in-law Charlie Skinner, a North Salt Lake police officer, last November in a car crash.
He said though his daughter and two kids miss him, he's proud of Skinner. "Even though he passed away, he died a hero," he said.
Skinner's name was the last to be added to this wall of fallen officers at the new memorial, hopefully another name won't soon follow.
Money raised from the last two rides paid for the memorial. The money raised from Sunday's ride will go toward an endowment to support families who have lost a loved one on duty and for their grave markers.
DRAGNET, I LOVE LUCY, THE HONEYMOONERS, AND OTHER CLASSIC TV SHOWS HONORED WITH POSTAGE STAMPS!
The classic TV series Dragnet was honored with its own postage stamp Tuesday. The stamp was celebrated during a ceremony at the Los Angeles Police Department Academy in Elysian Park, attended by the widow of the late JACK WEBB, who starred in Dragnet as Sergeant Joe Friday and also produced the show, as well as actor HARRY MORGAN, who played Friday's partner, Officer Bill Gannon, in the '60s version of the show. Dragnet first aired in the 1950s and spawned several other series.
Dragnet was also commemorated at a North Hollywood event honoring the release of 20 "Early TV Memories" stamps, a collection featuring I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners and other shows.

If you got upset this morning when you forgot where you left the car keys, new research shows you'll also forget two other things during the course of your day.
A survey commissioned by Britain's National Lottery agency shows the average adult forgets three key facts, tasks or items each and every day. The survey of two thousand British adults also found than men are more likely than women to forget things, even though women generally have more things to remember.

'CASH FOR CLUNKERS' PROGRAM IS NOW UNDERWAY
    • Program gives a $3,500 to $4,500 credit to people who trade in gas guzzlers
    • New vehicles must be more fuel efficient
    • Program set to end November 1 or when money runs out
Cars bought through the program must get at least 22 mpg, like this Ford Focus. Rules are different for trucks.
Cars bought through the program must get at least 22 mpg, like this Ford Focus. Rules are different for trucks.

Under the program, federal funds will be used to give people a $3,500 to $4,500 credit to replace their gas guzzlers -- generally vehicles with a combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less -- with certain new vehicles that are more fuel efficient.
The exact credit depends on how much more fuel efficient the new vehicle is.
Fuel economy thresholds for new vehicles vary according to type. New cars must have a combined city/highway fuel economy of at least 22 mpg. SUVs and small or medium pickup trucks or vans must get at least 18 mpg. Large vans and pickups must get at least 15 mpg.
The traded-in cars must be less than 25 years old, and their titles must be free of any liens. Consumers can go to a Web site, cars.gov, to learn about the program's rules. People also can call a CARS hot line at 866-424-9153. FuelEconomy.gov: See if your vehicle qualifies for CARS program

Death mandated for the clunker: After its oil is drained and replaced with sodium silicate, the engine is run until it seizes. The vehicle must be crushed or shredded.
About 250,000 cars are expected to be junked under the program.
Enjoy your Pioneer Day Weekend! It is gonna be hot..
Beating the heat: Where the cool spots are A lot of us are hoping to catch a break from some pretty intense heat along the Wasatch Front this holiday weekend. So, where are the best places to do this? Many people will be heading to nearby parks, but some parks may not be as cool as others.
    • If you have a large area of concrete to the south of one of these parks and you get a south breeze, it's going to be blowing that hot air off all this concrete or blacktop.
    • If you have a large amount of water in the near vicinity on a summer day, if you're near that water, it's going to most like be cooler.
Some people may head to the mouths of City Creek or Parley's canyons for those canyon winds. Well, that's not always a good idea.
    • During the day, as the valley heats up, the [warm] wind actually starts to flow up the canyon. So, where are the shady spots? East side reaching from the Avenues to Tanner Park - older neighborhoods, so they're very well-shaded and mature landscapes.
City Creek Canyon - you have the river running down which cools the area off and all of the trees there. Liberty Park is well-shaded with a water source, making it cool place on a hot day. Cedar City may be surprisingly cool compared to other southern cities.

Michael Jackson's Record Sales: Still "Off The Wall"
More than a week after MICHAEL JACKSON's death, his album sales continue to thrill the Billboard charts. Over the past week, Michael's albums sold an amazing 800 thousand copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan. What's even more amazing is that in this iTunes era, most of the albums sold -- 656 thousand of them -- were actual physical CDs that people purchased in stores, not online. The number-one selling album in the U.S. this week is Michael's Number Ones collection, which sold 339 thousand copies. The number-two selling album is Thriller, which sold 187 thousand copies.

Alaska isn't big enough for SARAH PALIN!
Last Friday, the Republican governor said she was leaving office on July 26th, nearly a year-and-a-half before her term ends. The abruptness of the announcement by the former vice presidential candidate shook the political world.
She didn't say immediately what her plans were after resigning as governor other than her simply returning to life as a hockey mom.
"I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint."
She appeared to fuel speculation that she's at least thinking about running for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012.
According to Palin, she is held to a different standard than other politicians who don't complete a term because of some higher calling. Palin insisted that her decision had to do, quote, "with country."
As for why she's stepping down now, Palin offered reasons such as not wanting to be a lame-duck and ending attacks on her five children, including her son, TRIG, who has Down syndrome.
Palin will be replaced by Lieutenant Governor SEAN PARNELL, who's already said that he'll run for reelection when this abbreviated term ends.
SAFE DRIVING REPORT RANKS SALT LAKE CITY 99th.
Utah drivers may be getting a bad rap, at least compared to an Allstate insurance report on safe cities for driving. The annual report ranks Salt Lake City 99th out of 200 U.S. cities with similar populations.
It's based on the number of years an average driver goes without an accident. In Utah, that number is around 11 years. In Sioux Falls, S.D., -- designated by the study as the safest city -- the average time between crashes is 13.5 years.

Here are the Safest Driving Cities:
    1. Sioux Falls, SD
    2. Fort Collins, Colo.
    3. Chattanooga, Tenn.
    4. Cedar Rapids, Iowa
    5. Knoxville, Tenn.
    6. Fort Wayne, Ind.
    7. Lexington-Fayette, Ky.
    8. Eugene, Ore.
    9. Boise, Idaho
    10. Colorado Springs, Colo.

The report says Washington D.C., is the most dangerous city. It says drivers there average an accident about every five years.
The report says Alexandria, Va, is the most improved driving city.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says auto crashes in general have declined over the last few years, but crash fatalities still average 40,000 every year.
It was a tribute fit for a King of Pop, as MICHAEL JACKSON'S family, fans and fellow artists celebrated his life and legacy in a public memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Throughout the star-studded event filled with tributes and musical performances, Michael's opulent, gold-plated and rose-covered coffin rested in front of the arena, where it had been carried by his brothers. Michael's three children -- PRINCE MICHAEL, PARIS, and BLANKET, who clutched a Michael Jackson doll -- huddled close to the family, including their grandmother, KATHERINE JACKSON, in the first row.
Without a doubt, the most emotional moment of the ceremony came when Michael's daughter, Paris, addressed the crowd of just under 20 thousand, and broke down in tears, sobbing, "Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine and I just wanted to say I love him so much."

Yesterday, MICHAEL JACKSON's mother, KATHERINE, was granted temporary guardianship of her late son's three childen. She also filed a petition to become the permanent guardian of the children, 12-year-old PRINCE MICHAEL, 11-year-old PARIS MICHAEL KATHERINE and seven-year-old PRINCE MICHAEL II, aka BLANKET. According to the Los Angeles Times, a judge has set a hearing for July 6th to consider that request.
In explaining why the children should stay with their grandmother, the filing stated, "They have a long established relationship with paternal grandmother and are comfortable in her care." The whereabouts of DEBBIE ROWE, the biological mother of the two eldest children, was listed as "unknown" in the filing. In a press conference yesterday, Michael's father JOE JACKSON said that Rowe, quote, "has nothing to do with" these proceedings.
The Jackson family's attorney said, quote, "Mrs. Jackson deserves custody, and the family should have the administration of the brilliance of Mr. Michael Jackson. Mrs. Jackson is a wonderful, loving and strong woman with a special family many of us have admired for years."
In addition, Katherine Jackson also asked a judge to name her administrator of Michael's estate, so she can ensure that the children can benefit from it. Katherine has been designated the special administrator of certain tangible personal property, excluding real estate, pending the July 6th hearing. A hearing on these various issues is also scheduled for August 3rd.
That last court filing stated that Michael died without a will, but in this case, it simply means that the family isn't in possession of a will. It's understood that Michael did have a will but it's in the custody of a lawyer who plans to file it soon.

TV pitchman BILLY MAYS probably died of a heart attack in his sleep. A medical examiner in Hillsborough County, Florida also said yesterday that the 50-year-old pitchman suffered from hypertensive heart disease, adding that the walls of the left ventricle of Mays' heart and of one of his arteries were enlarged. However, additional tests must be completed before an official cause of death is revealed. The announcement should come in eight to 10 weeks.
The medical examiner also noted that Mays had been using prescription painkillers to treat pain in his hip. There's no evidence to suggest that Mays, who'd been slated to undergo hip replacement surgery yesterday, had abused the drugs.
Mays' wife, DEBORAH, said in a statement yesterday, quote, "While it provides some closure to learn that heart disease took Billy from us, it certainly doesn't ease the enormous void that his death has created in our lives."
Deborah had said that Mays complained of not feeling well when he went to bed on Saturday, the same day he was a passenger on a plane that had a rough landing in Tampa. He said afterward that he had been hit on the head by an object. The autopsy revealed no evidence of head trauma.
Mays was found unresponsive by his wife at their Tampa home on Sunday morning. The tape of the 911 call was released yesterday, but the caller has not been identified.
Mays is best known as the TV face of OxiClean, Orange Glo and other products. In his honor, the Discovery Channel will air a marathon of his reality series Pitchmen tomorrow. Also, the companies that produce Mighty Putty and Mighty Mendit have announced that they will pull their ads featuring Mays from the air until this Monday, out of respect for his passing.

BILLY MAYS, the popular high-energy pitchman who hawked OxiClean, Orange Glo and other products in TV commercials, has died suddenly at the age of 50. Mays was found unresponsive by his wife yesterday morning at their Tampa, Florida home and was later pronounced dead by a fire rescue crew. Tampa police say foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is expected to be completed by this afternoon.

Mays had been a passenger on a U.S. Airways flight that had a rough landing Saturday afternoon at Tampa International Airport. Mays recalled the incident to MyFox Tampa Bay, saying, quote, "All of a sudden as we hit, you know, it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head." According to local police, Mays' wife, DEBORAH, said the commercial spokesman complained of not feeling well before going to bed that night.

Mays, distinguished by his dark beard, his loud voice and the obvious passion he had for his products, most famously pitched OxiClean, Orange Glo and an online service for ESPN. He was also the star of Discovery Channel's Pitchmen, which chronicled the work of Mays and fellow pitchman ANTHONY SULLIVAN. Discovery Channel said in a statement, quote, "Everyone that knows him was aware of his larger-than-life personality, generosity and warmth. Billy was a pioneer in his field and helped many people fulfill their dreams. He will be greatly missed as a loyal and compassionate friend."

Mays and Sullivan both appeared on an episode of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien last week.

    JACKSON TOXICOLOGY RESULTS WEEKS AWAY
An autopsy is being performed today, but the results of toxicology tests on entertainer Michael Jackson's body may not be available for six to eight weeks, the Los Angeles coroner's office said.

MICHAEL JACKSON DIES AT AGE 50

The self-professed "King of Pop" and the artist named "The Most Successful Entertainer of All Time" by the Guinness Book of World Records -- has died at the age of 50.
Reports are that Jackson suffered cardiac arrest at his home in the Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles yesterday afternoon. Someone in Jackson's household called 911 at around 12:26 PT, and responding paramedics reportedly found him with no pulse or respiration. Attempts to revive Jackson in the ambulance en route to UCLA Medical Center were unsuccessful, as were subsequent attempts at the hospital. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office confirms that Jackson was declared dead at 2:26 PM PT. Reports that Jackson was alive but comatose upon arriving at UCLA Medical Center were apparently inaccurate.

Speaking at UCLA Medical Center yesterday, Michael's brother JERMAINE said, quote, "It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known." An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Though varied reports of ill health plagued Jackson on and off for the past several years, he was most recently preparing for a series of comeback concerts scheduled to begin July 13th of this year and run through March of next year at London's O2 Arena. According to E! News, Jackson had passed a medical exam for the residency, for insurance purposes. He reportedly had been rehearsing as recently as Wednesday night for the concerts, which were expected to earn him well over $100 million.

It was money that Jackson desperately needed to ease mounting personal financial pressures. In November of 2008 he transferred the title to his 2,500 acre Neverland Ranch to an investment and development company after he defaulted on nearly $25 million owed on the note.

Jackson sold over 750 million albums worldwide during his astonishing career, including his most successful solo album, 1982's Thriller. The Recording Industry Association of America ranks the album as the #2 best-selling album of all time in the U.S., with total sales in excess of 28 million copies. Only THE EAGLES' Greatest Hits 1971-1975 surpasses it. Thriller is the best-selling album worldwide, with an estimated 50 million copies having been sold. It won eight Grammys, including Album of the Year, and spawned seven Billboard top-ten singles, including Beat It, Billie Jean and the title track.

In the hours following his death, Jackson's music occupied the top 15 spots in Amazon.com's best-selling album list. As of early this morning, the highest-ranked album was the 25th anniversary edition of Thriller.

Jackson is one of the few artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, both as a solo artist and a member of THE JACKSON FIVE, the 1970s singing group he fronted with brothers MARLON, TITO, JACKIE and Jermaine. He enjoyed 13 number-one singles and won 13 Grammy awards as a solo performer. NEIL PORTNOW, president of the Recording Academy, said of Jackson yesterday, "Rarely has the world received a gift with the magnitude of artistry, talent, and vision as Michael Jackson. He was a true musical icon... We are deeply saddened by this tragic news and our hearts go out to his family and to music lovers around the globe who mourn this great loss."

In May of 1994, Jackson married LISA MARIE PRESLEY, daughter of ELVIS PRESLEY, though they divorced in 1996. In a statement released last night, Presley said, "I am completely shocked and saddened by Michael's death. My heart goes out to his children and his family."

In 1997, Jackson he married DEBBIE ROWE, a nurse, with whom he had two children -- son PRINCE MICHAEL JR and daughter PARIS. The pair divorced in 1999. In 2002, Jackson fathered a third child, PRINCE MICHAEL JACKSON II, aka BLANKET, by an unrevealed surrogate mother whom Jackson said was artificially inseminated with his own contribution.

In addition to his children and brothers, Jackson leaves behind sisters JANET, LA TOYA and REBBIE, and his parents, JOSEPH and KATHERINE JACKSON.

Miss California USA was stripped of her title yesterday, but not because of her stance on gay marriage or because of those pre-pageant racy photos. Pageant officials say 22-year-old CARRIE PREJEAN (pray-ZHAN) was fired because she violated her contract by failing to make at least 30 scheduled appearances on behalf of the Miss California USA organization. Similar allegations were raised by state pageant officials last month before Miss USA owner DONALD TRUMP allowed Prejean to keep her crown despite her scandals.

Trump said yesterday, quote, "Carrie is a beautiful young woman and I wish her well as she pursues her other interests." However, the Donald was more blunt in an interview with TMZ.com, saying, quote, "To me she was the sweetest thing. Everyone else -- she treated like s***."

Prejean was surprised by the latter comment, telling TMZ, quote, "I've shown respect for every party involved, even when they haven't shown it back." She also claims a state pageant official asked her last month to consider offers to appear on NBC's I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! and pose semi-nude for Playboy magazine, but she declined both requests. The official in question, KEITH LEWIS, says he did not pressure Prejean to accept either offer.

Former Miss California USA official SHANNA MOAKLER, who resigned her position last month in protest the day after Trump announced Prejean would keep her crown, said yesterday, quote, "My faith has been restored in the Miss Universe Organization and with Donald Trump." She didn't say if she'd consider rejoining the pageant.

Prejean has become a lightning rod for controversy since she voiced her opposition to same-sex marriage at the Miss USA pageant in April. She subsequently began speaking at events that promoted her viewpoint, in what was considered an apparent violation of her contract forbidding unsanctioned appearances without the pageant's approval. Prejean also drew attention for semi-nude photos that surfaced on the Internet, but Trump ultimately gave her a reprieve -- until yesterday.
Prejean's replacement is the state pageant's runner-up, 24-year-old TAMI FARRELL.

English contains more words than any other language on the planet and will add its millionth word early Wednesday, according to the Global Language Monitor, a Web site that uses a math formula to estimate how often words are created. The Global Language Monitor says the millionth word will be added to English on Wednesday.
The Global Language Monitor says the millionth word will be added to English on Wednesday.
The site estimates the millionth word will be added Wednesday at 5:22 a.m. Its live ticker counted 999,985 English words as of early Tuesday evening.
The "Million Word March," however, has made the man who runs this word-counting project somewhat of a pariah in the linguistic community.
Paul J.J. Payack, president and chief word analyst for the Global Language Monitor, says, however, that the million-word estimation isn't as important as the idea behind his project, which is to show that English has become a complex, global language.
    "It's a people's language," he said.
Other languages, like French, put big walls around their vocabularies. English brings others in.
Provo "English has the tradition of swallowing new words whole," he said. "Other languages translate."

With the nationwide digital television (DTV) transition set for June 12, the Federal Communications Commission is making free house calls to help consumers struggling with the transition to digital television. In-home services include set-up of a digital television (DTV) converter box, indoor antenna adjustments, and hooking up analog VCRs to a converter. Among those making house calls in some communities are members of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps, along with firefighters through the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Most services will be provided by contractors hired by the FCC, who are prepared to visit around 200,000 homes over the course of the transition if needed. For help, call 1-888-CALL-FCC now, or visit www.dtv.gov and enter your zip code or state in the upper right-hand corner of the page to find local events, assistance and information.

On June 12, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop analog broadcast service and transmit only digital signals. Consumers who do not subscribe to pay television services and have older, analog televisions will need to have digital-to-analog converter boxes attached to their televisions in order to continue receiving over-the-air television programming. They may also need to adjust or upgrade their television set-top antennas. The switch to digital will provide viewers with better sound, a better picture, more channels and more programs. The transition will also help save lives by clearing airwaves for better first-responder radio service. And it makes room for the future by clearing space for advanced mobile Internet services.

Apple Inc. slashed the entry price for an iPhone in half and lowered some laptops by $300 Monday, the company's first dramatic price cuts since the recession began a year and a half ago.
With co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs absent until his medical leave is over at the end of June, Apple's biggest unveiling at its annual conference for software developers was a new model of the iPhone, the 3G S. It looks the same but sports a faster processor, longer battery life, an internal compass, a video camera and a photo camera with better resolution and auto-focus.
    A 16-gigabyte version of the 3G S will cost $199 and a 32-gigabyte version will be $299.
The 8-gigabyte iPhone 3G, which came out last year, now costs $99, instead of $199. When the iPhone debuted two years ago, eager Apple fans had to shell out $499 for a 4-gigabyte version and $599 for 8 gigs.
The latest iPhones go on sale June 19, just as two-year contracts for the buyers of the original models are expiring and Apple faces tougher competition from the likes of Research in Motion Ltd. and Palm Inc. On Saturday Palm came out with a well-regarded iPhone rival, the $200 Pre.
"Ninety-nine dollars is a psychological price point, so that's a real barrier to move through. It becomes something people can afford — it becomes an affordable luxury."
Among other upgrades, the new iPhone software will let people download movies and TV shows using the device's cellular connection. It will let users send photos and videos the same way they send text messages, bringing the iPhone in line with other smart phones. (AT&T won't offer this feature until late in the summer.) And the new software will let parents limit the kinds of applications kids can download.

Summer is here, and that means so are summer jobs. While lots of young people find work as lifeguards or camp counselors, just as many are forced off the beaten path to find their first paychecks.
Don't worry if you get stuck with an odd job that might not totally dovetail with your life goals, though. Lots of wildly successful celebrities have had some strange jobs before hitting it big.
Here are just a few quirky vocations held by some of your favorite celebs:
    1. Orlando Bloom's first job was working at a skeet shooting range as a clay pigeon trapper when he was just 13.
    2. Beyonce Knowles' mother owned a salon when the future pop star was growing up, so the aspiring singer picked up some extra cash by sweeping up hair.
    3. As a teenager Mick Jagger worked as an ice cream salesman. After entering the London School of Economics, Jagger also worked as a porter at a mental hospital.
    4. Jagger wasn't the only member of the band to have a gig before the Stones. Keith Richards worked as a ball boy at a tennis club.
    5. Need a rat catcher? Call Warren Beatty. He caught rodents to pay the bills before hitting it big. Mental Floss: 6 movies with depressing alternate endings
    6. It's tough to envision Colin Powell as anything other than a general or diplomat, but when he was growing up in the Bronx, he worked in a baby furniture store. Powell even picked up a bit of Yiddish on the job since that was the preferred language of his employers.
    7. Warren Buffett had cash going through his hands even as a young man; his first job was at his grandfather's grocery store, although he eventually worked his way up to a gig at J.C. Penney.
    8. Actress Amy Adams needed cash to buy a car after high school, so she spent two months working as a Hooters girl.

    THE WORLD'S LONGEST PANTS

Pants are in this year. A fashion designer from Tunisia named Larbi Boukamha set a world record Saturday when he unveiled the longest pair of trousers, at 164 feet. That's roughly the height of a 22-story building. The trousers feature a 118-foot waist and cost more than 23 thousand dollars to make. Boukamha shattered the previous record for world's longest trousers, which measured about 131 feet.

Good luck finding a shirt to wear with the pants.

He doesn't plan to sell the pants until he's finished making the world's biggest belt.
